As Christians we often talk about joy, not happiness. Recently I was reminded that God loves happiness also, not just deep joy!

And though there are a few seasons where happiness is fleeting or unnatural such as in major grief…

The truth is, God wants us to truly lay down worries, to work hard using our gifts, and also to enjoy the happiness and satisfaction that results from doing this. He even wants us to think happy thoughts (Phil 4:8).

So if you have a desire for more joy and happiness in your life, take these 5 Tips into consideration!

To have happiness, try to avoid too many “shoulds” and embrace your healthy and God-given roles. Thoughts like, “I should lead a Bible study this semester,” or “I should go to the ladies’ night out,” need to go. What are you “shoulding” that your own body or wisdom is telling you isn’t wise? What is it that you desire to do instead that still glorifies God and fits well into your life now? Frankly, sometimes it may be leading a group or heading to a night out – but just because something is good, doesn’t mean it fits for us right now. There are a few “shoulds” we need to heed now and always. We should pay our bills, do hygiene, care for others, etc. But there is a God who gave you personal and specific wisdom for the details for the HOW and WHO and WHEN since our resources are limited and time as well. If we please God by seeking His desires first, the Bible said man’s ideas for us are not nearly as important (Romans 8:31).
Gauge whether you’re getting enough rest as you strive for more happiness in your calling. If you genuinely run well on 5-6 hours of sleep or less, go you! But if you’re like most people, you can’t cut corners on sleep and also keep those sunshine vibes. Try to get 7-8 hours depending on your body’s need. On a day where that’s impossible, try for a nap or micronap so your work is actually good and you’re able to be present, not exhausted.
Don’t skimp on real food and good vitamins – One of my greatest downfalls that led to the season of a lack of happiness in my life for me was “cheating the system.” At that time I literally thought I could find more time by drinking only Boost shakes and a fast food meal for dinner. Yes, seriously I did this! Now I look forward to eating at home and at places that fuel my soul and body both a lot more naturally than fast sugar highs and chemical foods do! I’ve learned in the process that the closer things are to organic or sprouted, whole, real foods, the better…what a concept! 🙂
If you want true happiness, don’t push your body past its limits. That was probably my biggest learning curve in the process. As you stay within your limits, whatever they are, you’ll find happiness exudes even if you’re slower than you used to be!
Practice moderation in everything, not just exercise – This may be the hardest step for some of us, but it’s truly wise. Not getting seconds or thirds of dinner, not indulging in dessert or carbs after the fuel part of the day is over, not overdoing at work or exercise – these things too will help you to find balance.
In other words, as you seek out fun things to fill you up…

Enjoy, don’t exploit.

Don’t make your body sorry you’re its master. Feed your mind, your spirit, and your body with things to love and nurture yourself and keep you going strong so you can exude those God-given happiness vibes. This will lend itself to health and to a better life for you and those you influence.
